"Medium ruby-purple in color, the 2019 Zinfandel Giuseppe & Luisa bursts with singular aromas of dried lavender and citrus peel, smoky, mineral-like undertones and loads of exotic spices over a core of wild berry preserves and peaches. It's incredible in the mouth, its full flavors delivered in a silky, ultra fresh and lifted frame, and it finishes with loads of floral nuance. Wow! 1,653 cases produced."
The 2019 growing year was the second dry year in a row for us. We had an especially dry spring and it warmed up early, so the vines got an early jump on the season. Bloom came along in early May and the temperatures were perfect for berry pollination. The clusters ended up setting an abundance of berries. We had to do quite a bit of cluster thinning to maintain our desired crop levels and to get some sunlight and air movement into the canopy. Harvest came early as well. Fortunately, we had cooler temps about midway through, which slowed down picking and allowed us to catch up on things - including sleep! Harvest was complete after 7-8 weeks.
The 2019 Giuseppe & Luisa Zinfandel has a very forward nose of candied cherries, raspberries, earl grey tea and earthy notes. The palate is juicy and dense with flavors of raspberry and bright red cherry fruit with spicy notes.
About the winery:
The history of Martinelli goes back generations! It all started in 1895 when Giuseppe Martinelli left the Minnesota coal mines in search of a place to start a winery in California. When he arrived, the Russian River Valley reminded him of his Italian homeland so that is where he settled. It was later that he realized the tremendous potential of Jackass Hill and planted his first Zinfandel vineyard there.
Today, the Martinellis vineyards are planted to Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, tiny quantities of Sauvignon Blanc and Muscat, and of course, Pinot Noir. The valleys maritime influence is perfect for Pinot Noir, which needs a long ripening season with warm days and cool nights. These tiny production Pinot Noirs are all handcrafted. The grapes are whole cluster pressed and 100 barrel-fermented with their own natural yeasts. They are bottled unfined and unfiltered and, therefore, have a little naturally occurring sediment. These wines are intense, with gobs of ripe fruit, luscious tannins and tremendous depth. Yet they are not overblown and somehow manage to be elegant and powerful at the same time.
